The Program

The program will train students to become fully qualified Amchis – doctors of Sowa Rigpa. The first 4.5 years will be classroom based, followed by a 1 year clinical internship with senior doctors in the Kathmandu area. Core Sowa Rigpa courses will follow tradition, taught by with highly qualified Sowa Rigpa doctors at a level equivocal to Sowa Rigpa medical programs in Tibet and India. However, this college is unique in that it also incorporates additional training in as essential aspects of modern medicine necessary for an effective clinical practice in the modern world. Studies in herbal pharmacology will also include training in GMP production, and issued in ecological sustainability.

English will be the primary medium of study. As the subject and source materials and are all in Tibetan, there will also be a strong emphasis on developing fluency in classical Tibetan language. The BSM degree is accredited through Lumbini Buddhist University, and offers a degree recognized in Nepal and by educational institutions worldwide.

Campus

The college campus lies a short walk behind the Boudhanath Stupa, one of the holiest places in Kathmandu. The facility includes classrooms, the college library, dorms as well as a medical clinic and pharmacy which provides healthcare services to the local community.

Objectives

The general objectives of the Bachelor in Sowa Rigpa Medicine (BSM) course are to:

  • Cultivate a community of learned physicians and professors with an in-depth knowledge of Sowa Rigpa medicine.

  • Produce human resources for health services, education, and research.

  • Provide health services through different branch clinics and medical camps.

  • Conduct research in Sowa Rigpa medicine.

  • Preserve rare species of plants, animals, insects, and so forth; creating ethical and sustainable methods to use these species medicinally.

  • Create a world-class education and training program in Sowa Rigpa that is continuously improved and refined.

  • Put effort into maintaining ecological balance for the Earth and Nepal.

The aim of this course is to produce socially responsible and competent physicians who are willing and able to meet the existing and emerging challenges of national and international health care needs and systems. Furthermore, these practitioners should be able to address the causes of diseases and treat problems from the root level. They will learn to consider disease from a wider perspective, taking in account all relevant conditions such as environment, diet, lifestyles, spiritual growth and so forth that have caused the individual a certain kind of disorder. Students will develop confidence in communication skills, health-care systems, managing emergencies, and ritual practices.

The academic year is divided into two semesters:

Fall Semester: August through December 

Spring Semester: February through June

Botanical Field Studies

Following the tradition established at the time of the Fifth Dalai Lama’s original Chakpori Institute in the seventeenth century, summer mountain excursions to learn about and gather medicinal substances are an important practical dimension in the study of Sowa Rigpa. Students completing their second, third, and fourth years of training will spend 10-15 days each summer in various Himalayan regions identifying and gathering medicinal plants.
